February e-commerce sales see annual increase
New figures have shown that online retail spending rose by 13 per cent year-on-year in the UK during February.
The latest IMRG Capgemini e-Retail Sales Index reveals that Britons spent £4.1 billion on purchases from e-commerce websites last month.
However, sales fell by four per cent compared with January, reflecting the seasonal decline that usually follows the busy Christmas period.
Online sales in February were driven by Valentine's Day, with the fastest growing categories including footwear, accessories, lingerie and health and beauty compared with last year.
"The growth of less traditional sectors in February paints an optimistic picture of consumers picking themselves up following the doom and gloom of the last couple of years," said Chris Webster, vice-president of retail consulting and technology at Capgemini.
Earlier this month, Forrester Research released a report forecasting a compound annual growth rate of 11 per cent for the western European e-commerce sector up until 2014.
